Unseasonably heavy rain in the ironically dry Waterberg has left its muddy mark on the Grootegeluk mine just north of Lephalale, where thick brush hiding vervet monkeys and fever trees weighed down by weaver nests soon give way to another world.
Here, anything that dares to move on the ground is slicked in jet-black mud while, overhead, rollercoaster-like steel structures and vast stretches of conveyor belts help a complex of processing plants to gradually move mountains of coal – much of which is gobbled up by the Medupi and Matimba power stations puffing away in the distance. At the heart of it all is the largest open-cast, single-pit coal mine in the world which measures 3km by 7km wide and 120m deep.
A media tour of the site, and recently completed projects in particular, comes ahead of the fourth annual South African Investment Conference next week, where Exxaro Resources is bound to have some extra pep in its step as it heads to the event having completed significant investments at Grootegeluk and beyond.
