The State Government, through the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA), has awarded PhD scholarships to three professionals working on innovative research for Western Australia’s mining industry.

Kylie Ward has been awarded the Odwyn Jones PhD scholarship, named in honour of the pioneering Western Australian mining educator, to examine category-1 critical mineral tellurium as an additional value stream from KCGM’s Super Pit.

Bishenka Mahaulpatha has been awarded the PhD scholarship for Women to investigate the feasibility of effective metal recovery from tailings material via electrokinetic in-situ leaching.

Due to the exceptional quality of this year’s candidates, MRIWA has offered a third PhD scholarship to Martin Ralph to remove naturally occurring radioactive materials deposited in corrosion scale in mineral processing circuits.

The three recipients will join a cohort of 15 PhD researchers supported by MRIWA to help keep WA at the forefront of minerals research and technology development.

"The McGowan Government is committed to attracting the brightest talent from around the world to undertake important research into Western Australia’s mining sector.

"WA’s rich mineral endowment will continue to deliver great value to the State over the coming decades, and the vision of these research champions will be an important part of shaping that future.

"It’s great to see more women involved in important minerals research, as they are normally under-represented in the mining industry. We support securing the best ideas for industry, wherever they come from."
