RAPID CITY, S.D. – Have you ever picked up a rock and wondered how it got there in the first place?
Maybe not. But if so, you can bring it to the South Dakota Mines Geology Museum, and students there will identify your rock or fossil for free – as long as you don’t take their help for “granite”.
Paleo Club members from South Dakota Mines team up and volunteer to help the geology enthusiast of the community one day a year. Along with helping you figure out that rock is sitting on your desk, the students get valuable practice in their field.
“We see a lot of the same minerals, like in class and stuff, just the basic ones that we find anywhere,” explains Colette McAndrew, President of the SD Mines Paleo Club. “But this really gives members the opportunity to see like real world examples of what we’re looking at. And it also strengthens their own mineral identification skills.”
If you missed out on Saturday’s fun, not to worry, you can bring your rock or fossil into the museum at any time, and an employee will tell you all about it, free of charge.
